Hurricane Rita: Our Loss, Our Gain

Our Stories... I spent the night in the parish jail, with the doors unlocked, of course, so I could get my city back up and running.... Our home was virtually washed away in the rising flood waters.... By the time we got my mother from the nursing home, it was too late to leave.  We spent the night huddled in a closet..... We had to move above my mother's hair salon because our house was destroyed.... I stayed to broadcast the news.  We had to evacuate to Saint Patrick Hospital.  The building swayed all night, but we kept going.... When I returned, I discovered all of my store windows had blown out.  Only twelve of my forty employees returned.... We spent the night in a warehouse on the docks.  In spite of catastrophic flood and wind damage, the port was operational again within six days....
